Test Flights and Adjustments

Preparation procedure steps for the first test flight:

  1. Hand-launch the model as close to trim speed and attitude as possible and be prepared to apply immediate pitch corrections. With a headwind you will notice considerable and somewhat erratic movement of the AOA sensor vane and the elevon before releasing the glider. Once the glider is released it immediately calms down and flies very smoothly on its own.
  2. If both launch attitude and speed was correct but significant pitch corrections were required, AOA sensor attitude corrections are probably required. Make corrections and repeat step 1. Continue this process until the wing glides without major corrections.
  3. Final adjustments from this point are best performed on the slope. Make whatever final elevator trim adjustments might be necessary before working the CG back towards the design trim position.
  4. Make small incremental CG changes with the subsequent test flights and correct both elevator trim and AOA sensor attitude as necessary. As the CG is moved back, the trailing edge should eventually come down to final non-reflex attitude during flight. Only if the AOA sensor is lined up perfectly will the elevon deflection on the ground (without AOA sensor contribution) also look correct. Increase the AOA sensor gain if necessary. When everything finally lines up correctly the AOA sensor is ready to be frozen forever with a drop of CA around the rivet area.
  5. The last step is to adjust the gain to where it “feels” most comfortable. Generally a gain reduction is in order. Too much gain impairs glider pitch maneuverability.
